Sometimes life ain't fair.

It's been almost a month and the shock still hasn't worn off. On Christmas Day my friend Jenny called to tell me our mutual friend Bobby Oliver- or Bobby "OH" as we knew him as a caller to my talk show- had died that morning just before visiting family in LA ('Lower Alabama').

I was scared you-know-whatless when I first arrived in Montgomery. After a few shows in week #1, I was summoned by our receptionist to the lobby. There stood a big guy with a big smile who introduced himself as Bobby O. He said he liked my work and was glad to have me in Montgomery, Bobby struck me as a sincere, genuine Alabama guy and his compliment meant everything to me- the new guy in town, Bobby made me believe I had a chance to succeed in Montgomery,

Over the next several years, Bobby and his lovely wife Linda, were regulars at my radio promotions. Bobby made numerous friends who saw and appreciated what I saw in this bear of a man- the real deal. Bobby was a 24 carat human being with little tolerance of disingenuous people. His friendship was a compliment.

Bobby's wife Linda went through some health issues and no woman could have asked for a more doting, devoted man. He was her rock, and was one of those guys who took his wedding vows very seriously. Linda's health has improved remarkably, and now has to confront the grief that comes with losing the great love of her life at age 52.

Just days before he died, Bobby sent me a video that blew me away. I, in turn, sent it on to all my friends who are aviation enthusiasts, but anyone will appreciate it. It's also a great example of Bobby's ability to engage his child-like sense of wonder. Anything that makes us feel like a kid again is good, and this worked for me. It put the kind of smile on my face that Bobby O always wore on his.
